From Ukraine to Israel
Dana Levinson, an Irwin Cotler Fellow for 2024-2025 from Ukraine, is deeply committed to understanding the complexities of global security, the challenges to human rights and democracy, and the unique complexities Israeli society faces in times of war.
As a citizen of two countries affected by ongoing military conflicts, Dana has been profoundly shaped by the intersections of extremism, human rights, and international law. Born and raised in Ukraine, she was always aware of the challenges posed by geopolitical instability, corruption, and the critical importance of safeguarding democratic rights and freedoms. However, it was only when these issues directly impacted her own life that their full significance became more deeply understood.
Dana’s academic background is rooted in the fields of International Relations, Diplomacy, and Security Studies, with a particular focus on nuclear non-proliferation, arms control and disarmament. Over the years, she has developed a strong interest in the geopolitical dynamics of the Middle East, with a particular focus on the region’s complex conflicts, the interplay of international power relations, and the role of diplomacy in shaping security and stability. This interest has driven her to explore critical issues such as nuclear proliferation, regional rivalries between Iran along with its regional proxies and Israel, as well as the broader implications of arms control and disarmament.
Through the academic journey and living in Israel day-to-day experiences, Dana developed a strong passion for international law and human rights, and an unwavering commitment to understanding how democracy and justice can be preserved and advanced in the face of conflict. The profound impacts of war, terrorism, and the suppression of human rights have inspired her to pursue a career focused on advancing the protection of vulnerable populations, the promotion of democratic values, and the pursuit of global justice. Living alone in the Middle East as a young Jewish immigrant, separated from family, has strengthened her resilience and commitment to creating positive change.
For Dana, the Irwin Cotler Fellowship represents a critical opportunity to deepen her understanding of the challenges facing Israeli society, especially in times of war, and to continue building a career dedicated to advancing human rights, security, and democracy on a global scale.
